The Isley Brothers - This Old Heart of Mine

After listening to a lot of the Isley Brothers lately and remembering how much I love this track, I’ve come to notice the disconnect between the love-fueled desperation of the lyrics and the eternal catchiness of the tune. Maybe most people can understand the feelings behind the song, but the not many people’s loneliness comes out with this kind of pop. In music though, this effect works almost all the time - rocking out to sadness is sometimes the only way to get through it.

The other clear example of this in my mind is Freda Payne’s Band of Gold. I tell you, that’s another winner right there.
